ext3 or ext2.
strings should show you the errormessage without hurting a filesystem.

the message is:
---
WARNING: PROGRAMMING BUG IN E2FSCK!
OR SOME BONEHEAD (YOU) IS CHECKING A MOUNTED (LIVE)
FILESYSTEM.
