About your patch: modified-hildon-desktop already supports using single letter keys shortcuts on desktop, launcher and task navigator. For working on the desktop you need to use gconf disable contact search.

About stretching your fingers: there is a gconf setting for using ctrl+fn instead of ctrl+shift, since you can press those two keys with one finger.
