I originally bought it when it first came out as the "Navigation kit for Nokia 770". At least I got a bluetooth GPS out of it.

And by 'optimized', I meant that the buttons actually are finger sized and easy to use if you are driving. Navit does not do this very well (in fact it does it terribly since navigating the menu is so bad), and maemo mapper is essentially useless to me if I ever go out of range, and the map jumps all over the place. In wayfinder I at least had voice directions.
I guess it depends on what you compare it against. My yardstick was the original TomTom GO (already 2 years old at the time) which ran rings around 770+Navicore (and even N810+Wayfinder two years later) both performance and features-wise and was actually running on lesser hardware.
