I believe the vhd is just the disk image, but VMWare should be able to use it fine. Think you just need to create a linux 32bit profile and attach the disk to it. It's been quite a while since I used VMware but it is supposed to be supported. It does work fine with VirtualBox though as I recently did a similar set-up.
