Yes, you can try to unplug and reconnect it. Did you make sure to power off the N900, then press down the U key, and keep holding it while you connect it? Sometimes I find that connecting to a different USB port helps - but I really don't know the details or technical explanation for why, other than that windows seems to keep its drivers for every USB port separate.
