When you get the waiting for USB device message, it's normally a sign that you haven't yet unplugged the USB cable, held down the U key ON YOUR N900, and plugged in the USB cable while still holding down the U key.

There are some rare cases when you have a flakey USB port so this doesn't work properly, but usually, it does work.
