sorry to say it but usikng custom kernel when not being able to reflash the phone is a very bad idea.

you could try hooking to the serial console (under the battery, check the wiki for the pins) and see if you can load minimal set of modules or at least see the messages (remember that the console uses 5v logic so you need a level shifter or "ftdi breakout cable")
