its really a big hassle
One tap: on the blue square-circle with red dot. It's one of the widgets on the screen, it both shows whether centering is enabled and serves to toggle this setting.

The widget is present in all modes: train, car, bus, bicycle, walk.

Turning off centering when touching a button is a bug.
