After I said I was planning I remembered why I didn't: press and hold is captured by the "desktop" and will trigger "desktop settings". I don't have how to intercept it so I would have to create a "press and hold" for more than Xms and less than Yms and that would be very hard for any user. I think we will need to keep "thinking" about an alternative for the double click.
Two possible ideas:
split the on the the contact (e.g. left half show contact info, right half place call) - I don't like it!
after clicking on the contact show two buttons under (or above) the contact icon with the options - not trivial to implement but the best I could come up with so far...
