Sounds like installation of the becomeroot package hasn't worked successfully. The root account isn't locked by default, it's the same setup as on a 770 and the default root password is rootme. There is no user password which is why you shouldn't be prompted for a password when executing sudo gainroot as user - something hasn't gone to plan when you installed becomeroot.
I should just correct this statement - the reason there is no password prompt when executing "sudo gainroot" is because the /etc/sudoers file specifies that a password is not required, it has nothing to do with the user account not having a password.
