On either app manager, you should be able to view the dpkg and apt-get log (I think it's just the apt-get log, but apt-get uses dpkg, so it logs dpkg errors and such). Just press on the top of the bar where the app name is to get the drop down menu for the app manager you're using, and press the log or 'view log' or whatever button.
So, try installing it again, then if you get an error again, post the log.
Speaking of freoffice, in my eyes the latest version is amazing. I just wrote an essay for one of my college classes today. Entirely on the N900. Can't change the line spacing yet as far as I know, but everything else is great (just have to have stuff like 'tab' and pg_up / pg_down / home / end mapped to your keyboard for extra convenience). All of the older bugs like text being always caps-locked is gone. I just need it to recognize fn+shift+key combinations, on top of just shift+key and fn+key combinations. It was reasonably gentle on battery too. Overall I'm happy with it. Have to do formatting finalizations on a computer, but no other phone comes close. Now all I need is a bluetooth printer or a debian driver for my usb printer and I think usb-hostmode will be mature enough to make printing it work soon.
