Just to clarify this, everything you buy from Amazon is on your Amazon account online (in 'the cloud') so you can redownload all your content onto a new kindle if you so need.
As well, you can get the Kindle app for free on lots of other devices, PC, Mac, Crackberry, iphone/pod/pad/blarg, just hoping at some point they make one *nix friendly.
If you want a gaming device for her, get something else. If you want a straight eBook reader, you can't go wrong with the Kindle, and that new one is like $139 wi-fi only...pretty sweet.
Keep in mind this is a strictly biased opinion
