The black isn't fun, especially when we're just making slight adjustments; if it's necessary, we'll understand.
The impact would be 9 times the amount of memory required, and 9 times the amount of CPU time to render a view. The cost-benefit ratio is not worthwhile, in my opinion, especially when the black is only ever visible when you're manually panning (i.e. not Auto-Center).
