Maybe they will, towards the end of 2011 or early 2012. As you say, all the development work has been done on it, so it would be silly to waste it...

For all I know it may even be possible to gut the RM-680 and replace the circuit board design with a new one using higher spec (ST Ericsson U8500?) components, but keep the exterior design more or less as-is. A significant part of the "cost" of developing a new design like RM-680 is going to be ensuring it doesn't fall apart, or failure of the complicated hinge mechanism.

Call me naiive, but Nokia must be past masters at designing a mobile phone circuit board, and if not they bl00dy well should be. This must be one of the lowest cost aspects of the design process these days.
