As noted in the Installation FAQ, the Problems tab within Application Manager can often explain this in more detail. There is usually one of two reasons:

Not enough rootfs space
Conflicting packages preventing installation

Usually #2 is caused by installing new copies of system debs such as hildon-desktop.
