To connect to IRC, you need a server and a port. To negotiate connection, you need a nick and username.
Servers here:
http://freenode.net/irc_servers.shtml
Ports are 6666 and 6667-6669 and 7000 sometimes. Use 6666.
Nick must be unique. Pick something as needed. Usernames might be registered.
Go to terminal and root. Ping servers until they work, ideally telnet to port 6666 to make sure (IRC is a text protcol).
Mine works just fine. Test your settings from a PC and make sure ports aren't closed.
If you don't want simple messages, you need a full client. Use xchat, it's good. I am fairly sure fonts can be changed.
Note that telepathy plugins were meant for IM. IM is based on peer message. IRC is a Relay Chat system, which is used to relay messages through servers to channel members. IRC is chatroom-centered so a client will be way better.
