Can you boot into a Terminal using Ctrl+Shift+X? Or launch it as per normal?
If so then you may want to try to run the following:

killall hildon-desktop apt-get update apt-get upgrade -y
You can also try the following if the others don't have the desired effect:

apt-get -f install dpkg --configure -a
