It would be very great to somehow tweak the effects or turn one off.

I thought all the effects are handled with the transitions.ini...

Maybe some devs are in a happy mood and look into it.
...Looking forward to a CustomFX app or plugin.

would be great to be able to tweak the desktop switching parallax effect, too
btw, where is that handled? hard coded in hildon-desktop?
