I also played with WP7, much more fluid, much more responsive than Symbian 3.
I already wrote this:
Nokia probably will gain some customers in USA
but it will loose many in the rest of the world.
Rising markets like China are looking for Linux
( e.g. http://www.informationweek.com/news/...leID=170700943 ) and Nokia is going
into the opposite directory.
So it is not Europe vs. America
but
American market vs. rest of the world market.
Nokia ignores that.

Also it is not a distinction between Symbian and WP7.
Forget both for real smartphones.
It would have been important to develope Maemo and/or MeeGo.
If you compare (the older) Maemo to (the newer) WP7 you'll
see what I mean: WP7 is lame, lacking important features (some were named hereconfs).

Regarding "lame" read this:
"More interesting and informative was the discussion around multi-tasking however. It appears fast task switching does not mean multi-tasking, but rather rapid suspend and restore, and that real multi-tasking will be exclusive to certain tasks such as the background music task, much like on the iPhone."
If you ever _really_ used a N900 you will know what _real_ multitasking looks like (e.g. tarring some directories and doing a phone call at the same time is no problem).

"MS that KNOWS how to do software engineering" ?
Are you sure?
Vista was a showcase against your assumption.
Their security handling is another showcase.

If Nokia goes on with MeeGo - ok.
But why did they decide to go with a half-baked system
like WP7?
Maemo was the only developed and running platform
for real smartphones. And afaics it was stopped.

Sure, masses will still use it for another 5-6 years and you will get your support and so on. But just like any other OS, things change and WP7/8/9/10 will give everyone else run for their money. I would be excited to be at NOKIA know, with new beginning, new cash infusion and ability to work for innovators like MS
There is currently no cash infusion for Nokia.
Stocks sink the last time I looked.
MS and Nokia still talk about the hows and there was
no money flow from MS to Nokia afaics.
And: MS is no innovator and has never been.
