1) Yes, battery will last at least 1.5 - 2 days (after PR1.3 update).

2) I would buy the E7. I know Google Nexus S is a great phone, but sorry, I'm a bit (negatively) biased for Samsung phones. I don't like HTC because of their known high SAR levels. Another choice could be Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro (for the Playstation feature )

If you have time to read through some threads, you'll see other recommendations. The N900 may lose out on some hardware specs (since it was launched in 2009), so, you should compare based on price factor as well (does not make sense to compare the N900 with iPhone 4, but more realistic to compare with iPhone 3Gs).

I really like my N900. It's an awesome phone (even though I stay clear of development stuffs). If you can get over the form factor (brick), then the other issues are really subjective.

Note of caution: N900 does not support 3G video call and voice navigation for Ovi maps (but you can overcome with Sygic maps I understand)
