My splicer utility works if you have python installed. You could use it as an alternate way of launching videos in mplayer since it appears they still don't have 'open with' functionality

Interesting to note the gtk dialogs (which i prefer) seem faster and fit screen better than gtk version in 2007.

If you need to edit the app list you will need editor like (leafpad?) installed and use splicer to open/edit the /usr/lib/splicer/splicer.apps file with that editor.
