Don't know if this has been mentioned yet but I'd suggest that (since the notification lights are already implemented in the CSSU as FOSS) the following hack to have a battery notification-LED would also be implemented.

Blink Notification led on Battery Low

EDIT: Ah, I didn't seem to go through the thread that well. Found this post that does add the low battery-indicator to the LED Pattern Editor.

I've implemented the script in Vala and packaged it as Low Battery LED (lowbatled).
If there is no PatternBatteryLow in mce.ini, the package postinst will add it using mceledpattern and restart MCE.
