install rootsh first
then
sudo ifconfig ...
sudo ifup ...
or
sudo gainroot
ifconfig ...
ifup ...
or you can take a risk and do
/sbin/ifconfig ...
/sbin/ifup ...
it might just work if you're only viewing info.
