Don't know about the media player crashing (but does the problem persist after a reboot?) As to problem #2, you need tracker-cfg: http://maemo.org/packages/view/tracker-cfg/ Your N900 has a habit of finding all of your media files and adding them to the tracker database so they are shown in media player. You need to restrict the directories it watches.
