To the OP: I don't know what your target market segment is, but if I were you I would go with either Meego or Android.
Maemo has at least two closed source components that are deal breakers: the graphics and telephony stacks.
Besides, it is unlikely that Nokia will support Maemo any more.

So to summarise: Android or Meego.
My personal preference: Meego.

I think it would be cruel to lead him into thoughts that this will be feasible. He got confused over java and Linux and asked if there were closed sourced components. It doesn't seem like he knows the first thing about software or hardware development. This is a massive task, I've done LFS multiple times and made basic electronic items but I've never considered myself up to scratch to pull of making an entire tablet from nothing at all
