To the OP: I don't know what your target market segment is, but if I were you I would go with either Meego or Android.
Maemo has at least two closed source components that are deal breakers: the graphics and telephony stacks.
Besides, it is unlikely that Nokia will support Maemo any more.

So to summarise: Android or Meego.
My personal preference: Meego.
Thanks for finally understanding where I'm coming from and not being a a**hole about it. I'm seriously just trying to absorb any and all information I can and like you said this asking this forum has proved to be unconventional to say the least.

Market segments: Rural areas in South America for poor children so they can use this as a tool for learning. Places in the US for low income households.

Thanks for the tip, I am certainly looking at both options right now.

What pcb design proggy are you using? and just where will you get the protortype built? and how are you going to source single batch components from to build this protortype tablet?.

Oh i got many questions like how are you going to actually solder down such components as the cpu for instance, oh and what cpu will you be thinking of using? (among the many other multi functional components).

Are you designing a single or multi layer pcb(s)?.

Have you got a team of software designers working for you?.

This is for sure a windup thread.

PS the answers to this post will be interesting to read i am sure.
Believe it or not those are things I actually have covered. Please continue asking me questions though, I actually appreciate it. I am hoping you will ask a question that I haven't already considered so you will save me the trouble of running into that problem later on.

I think its silly for you to assume that just because I am not an expert now that I am destined to fail. All of you make it sound as if you popped out the womb an expert on this subject, but no, all of you had to learn and ask questions to get to where you are now. I won't be deterred by any of your snide or condescending comments I will just continue learning from them until I know what I need to know (which may be volumes and volumes of information - I accept that I may know very little at this point but I am on the path of finding out more). I'm sorry you don't consider yourself able to make a tablet...sucks for you..

I would like to give OP the benefit of doubt.
Um I wouldn't say I am planning on doing it on my own or am planning to hire someone. At this point still figuring things out. But things are looking extremely likely such that I will end up bringing on a software engineer to work with my business partner and I on this product. We already have someone in mind and are getting in contact with him so to all those who think I need help, don't fret. Thanks again to all those who have helped me so far.
