If they close their binaries and such, hardware manufacturers lose the ability to make custom layers over the Android OS (HTC sense for starters) So this can be a setback for them.

Also, of the OS will no longer be supplied freely, the obvious next step for a such a company would be to charge manufacturers in order to use it's OS..
