Unfortunately, if they stipulate in the purchase license that it is illegal to unlock a device, I would bet that it would be possible for them to argue that it is indeed. I'm not familiar with the muddy waters of the law, but IP law seems especially murky.

I would have to read the bootloader-modification license to determine if its free enough. The contract may just restrict re-distribution of a modified bit of electronics under a new trademark, which could be a formalized statement compatible with nearly every finalized device on the market. Of course it could also be much more sinister. The actual license will reveal all, I'm sure.

PS. I know nothing of the law.
