Doing this fluidly requires a certain amount of screenspace, so I have started thinking about ten inches as the size I need.

Since I spent my entire high school and college years carrying a spiral notebook of nearly that size, often schlepping everywhere by bus or hitchhiking without feeling oppressed, I don't see why carrying a tablet in one hand should suddenly seem like a terrible thing.

So I'm thinking small cheap pocketable cell phone and luxurious big tablet as the good combo for me.
I can see this combo being very enticing. Having worked off of an 8.9" netbook screen and having preteneded it was a touch screen, this size seems quite adequate also.

I thnk it comes down to experience. It's hard to imagine the types of interaction over the life of a tablet device.

For example, I have heard many stories of indiviuals whose iPads are more-or-less collecting dust (eg. Anandtech staff). On a similar note, I have read stories about individuals reaching for their 7" tablets much more frequently due to the portability alone, 'mobile phone' os not withstanding. This isn't evidence, but perhaps a hint that a larger size.
