Dammit!
Wait...... I have an idea, since we won't really "own" our phones, the carriers could charge us a little more every month, and give us new phones every couple of years, you know kind of like renting, or leasing a car

Ohhhhh, wait, nevermind.

I for one will switch to whatever carrier doesn't subscribe to this. Not that I see this becoming a big problem. I'm not sure this would really hold up. It would be similar to leasing a car, and have them prevent you from using the car if you aren't getting your oil changes done on time, and at their dealership.

I particularly don't like how the article refers to data "theft". If I'm paying for data (particularly under new plans with specified limits), I ought to be able to funnel that data to where I need it. Not to mention most of the plans already have specifics in place to deal with tethering. So just enforce the rules already in place instead of screwing everybody else.

All the more reason to get a wifi-only, non-carrier branded tablet.

*edit* not to mention, it'd only be a matter of time before someone reverse engineers the update process (since there will have to be a way to do it in store, not over the air), and keep/fool whatever tracking mechanism is in place.
