May be it is corrupted and need a file system check.
To see if it is there at all please try to install rootsh from extras repo. Here it is important to not activate testing and devel repositories. May be some further tweaks are necessary to install rootsh at all. If you receive errors please post here.

sudo gainroot
sfdisk -l
fsck -af /dev/mmcblk0p2
If these commands are executed without errors, reboot please to see what state the phone is now.

But keep in mind, that completely reflashing (fiasco & vanilla emmc images) the phone might still be the fastest way to get it back to normal.
