I use a t-mobile data-only plan. No tethering option. But I do tether to my laptop occasionally. I have never noticed any lag. I use epc.tmobile.com.

Edit: my data plan is the type of plan you would use for a device like a usb laptop stick, so I wouldn't expect to see lag on that.
