Android is under fire! Literally, major industry players -- Apple, Microsoft, Nokia, Oracle -- have started to attack companies that release Android products based on patent infringement.

Barnes and Noble being sued by Microsoft has responded:

Barnes and Noble quote:
Microsoft has asserted patents that extend only to arbitrary, outmoded, or non-essential design features, but uses these patents to demand that every manufacturer of an Android-based mobile device take a license from Microsoft and pay exorbitant licensing fees or face protracted and expensive patent infringement litigation.
Microsoft intends to utilize its patents to control the activities of and extract fees from the designers, developers, and manufacturers of devices, including tablets, eReaders, and other mobile devices, that employ the Android Operating System.
Microsoft has falsely and without justification asserted that its patents somehow provide it with the right to prohibit device manufacturers from employing new versions of the Android Operating System, or third party software.
Its a shame that this tactic is being employed, but such is business. I'm glad that B&N is calling Microsoft out on their FUD machine.

The Engadget article caps off with Ballmer trying to convince us that 'Android isn't free.' It reminds me of 1984....

Big Brother: "We're at war with Oceania..."
Everyone else: "Ohhhhh, right..."
