According to OMG!Ubuntu (and without any sources cited in the article), Ubuntu is to ship Wayland in place of X.Org Server by default in 17.10, a move that some here might find interesting.

A little (very little) googling found some extra info at the Ubuntu Wiki.

and what sources do you need? It's known fact that ubutu will switch to Gnome Shell and drop Unity 8. http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=99243
