Echolink is an amateur radio system which connects qualified amateur radio users to repeaters anywhere worldwide via IP. When they reach whichever repeater they want, the repeater re-transmits the signal locally to be picked up by any amateur operator in that area.

Has anyone successfully been able to get Echolink up and running on the N900? I will be (pleasingly) surprised if someone has as yet, mainly because it is a specialist application and users must hold an amateur licence (which must be verified) before using it. There is Echolink for linux but it has been hit-and-miss for me so I use Echolink for Windows running on Wine for my desktop PC.

There's Q-tel and echolinux that I know of. Q-tel requires qt-3 which isn't there for maemo I believe. Echolinux comes with a gsm librabry that is compiled using ELF, so that doesn't work either.

I managed to compile a working libgsm.a (by just backporting the debian package). Echolinux supplies a GUI which uses xform which isn't supported by maemo. I guess you could build your own as it seems the echolink binary does compile for armel.

Erm that's a bit above my head I am afraid. In the meantime I have emailed Echolink to see if they are planning an N900 version, they have released an iPhone version so N900 would be nice.

Echolinux is crap anyway so it seems.. It's full of potential buffer overflows, so doesn't work.
I hope the Echolink guys want to give it a shot.

Sadly I am not hopeful, they emailed me back and referred me to their FAQ which states whilst there is an iPhone app they have no plans to produce software for any other device at present.
