I picked up a Moto Z Play and it has Android 7 on it.
Whenever I plug in or remove the charger an ad pops up.

The calender is loaded with appointments for how to make money to the point that I can not see my appointments in the calender.

Yes I understand that the free apps are supported by ads and show ads in them. I am having a problem with ads appearing in the O/S.

That is horrendous, any idea which app causes that?

You can disable the bloatware in app settings. If you have rooted the device, try adaway from the F-droid app store, it does host file blocking so ads don't get downloaded.

Just a random pick from many

My suggestion, reflash it clean.

On a side note, it's sad to see Android also @maemo.org, I lost some hours on the Xperia X waiting for Sailfish and I lost the count how many times I had to answer 'no, thanks' to fu***ng pop-ups appearing on the phone as soon as i wi-fi connected it after saving its DRM keys.

And that's 85% of the mobile phone market...

Most probably the simplest option (without any investigation but only if you don't have any important data) would be a factory reset.

Have you got root access on your device?

try to disable the internet access of unnecessary apps or use firewall from f-droid.

Are you using Google calendar?

I had the same problem with my phone and I didn't know what to do about it.

I ended up turning off that calendar and then it stopped

Flash a free software ROM and use F-droid exclusively. No more problems, guaranteed!

No I have not rooted it.

It came with Android 6 and has been updated to Android 7
