Wow! It is good to see life in this forum after all these years!

I just purchased a refurbished N900, and received it last week. The one I bought in 2010 is suffering from a few things, like the USB has to be plugged in just so for it to charge...Many of my applications don't have icons any more, for instance, about 75% of the icons are pages with red Xs in them...The slide is showing signs of wear, and so forth.

Well, I was surfing ebay the other day, and found a refurbished N900 for $80, which was $370 cheaper than my original one. Having said that, there are a couple of issues with the new device. The first was that most of the repos have gone dark. But I found mirrors like maemo.muarf.org, which I mirrored, as well as maemo extras and extras-testing. So I have it all locally and need to set up an apt mirror.

The other thing that I am more concerned about is the display seems a bit strange. I'm hoping that it is a setting that I need to tweak, because, as a for instance, one of the go-to apps I use is xournal. On the old N900, I can write normally. But on the new one, I write in one place on the screen, but the letters show up elsewhere. I can record a video if that helps...Perhaps I should nuke from orbit and start over again? Reflash with PR1.3?

Anyone got any ideas on this?

Thanks,
--vr

as soon as you get someone else's nxx0 in your hands .
reflash
and set it up from there.

you don't know what mess someone else has made of the system otherwise.

Agreed.

The same applies when you are selling one.

I got two N900s from eBay. One was wiped through the on-board UI. The seller must have thought that was it, device clean. But, thanks to Nokia's infinite wisdom, the wipe did not touch the sent emails which were all left on the device. Genius!

The other device was sold to me as "not working". It just had a dead battery. I found the owner's details on the device which did not match the seller's. A red light went on in my head and I contacted the owner. Luckily it was all legit, the owner sold it to a pawn shop who then sold it on eBay.

After you have flashed and got CSSU testing installed you may wan't to do this too.

https://wiki.maemo.org/Easy_Debian/L..._Debian_Jessie

Netsurf is really fast for browsing and reading news/articles etc. but it does not support everything.

It's by juiceme. I noticed that installing .img to a newer sdcard makes debian work much faster with card formatted ext3.

Thanks! I will look into this. Personal preference, since I have not had the best of luck with systemd (that is an understatement), I would prefer to find a FreeBSD distro to run on it. I have converted my desktop and personal laptop to FreeBSD, and my work laptop runs Devuan...

I just wanted to update everyone on my situation. The unit mentioned in this post appears to have had a bad motherboard, and that was what was causing the digitizer accuracy to be off. The problem got worse when the device was hot.

So I had paid for a Squaretrade warranty, and they refunded me the cost of the unit, since the cost of repair was twice what I paid for it originally.

I then found two other units, one was about $80, and the other about $60. I purchased both of them, and they seem to work fine. I have reflashed both, and will probably use one, shelve the other, and use my original one for parts.
