I got my N800 two days ago, I am not a programmer, nor do I understand the real technical side of programming, etc. I want to download the new firmware for N800 (I sure hope it will enable me to use the "two" SDHC 8 Gig" cards I also bought (which do not work currently). I digress here, but somewhere I saw you needed the SDHC so that's what I ordered, only to see somewhere else the to get the 16 gig (total), you need SD without the HC! Arghhh!!
Anyway, I would love to update firmware, can't get the Wizard to recognize device on one of my Windows XP computers ---so I tried another one, and got it to work--sort of. I had to add something called .NET framework 2.0 from Microsoft which I did, then things moved along, the device was recognized, but when I tried to download the firmware, got messages about my clock not working or set right. I would appreciate any help anyone could give me and I am really hoping the updated firmware will enable me to use my two 8 Gig SDHC cards???

First of all, don't worry, you don't have to be a programmer to use an N800. :-)

.NET is an add-on for Windows which lets certain programs work properly, and one of those programs is the Wizard. Once it's been installed you don't need to worry about it any more.

Could you try to use the update wizard again, then when the message about the clock appears, write it down and come back here to tell us exactly what it says. By the way, did these messages appear on the PC screen or on the N800's screen?


Don't panic, you did exactly the right thing buying 8 gig SDHC cards.

SDHC cards work fine on the N800, in fact the ONLY way to get 16 gigs in total is to use SDHC cards.

Ordinary SD cards on the N800 only work up to 2gigs each.

However, to get SDHC cards to work on your N800 you may need to do the update you mentioned above, as this feature was added to the update over the summer and your N800 may have been manufactured before then.

Just a minor note on this: A few companies have made non-HC SD cards that are larger than 2 GB. They're non-standard, but they work in many devices including the N800. For instance, I've been using a 4 GB SD card made by Transcend with my N800 since February.

A 4 gig normal SD card may work in practice, but it's not officially supported so you shouldn't totally depend on it working. If you're totally new to a platform it's best to stick to the officially supported accessories.

First, thank you for being so patient, I think you can sense my frustrations, I had a hint that the new firmware would enable my already purchased SDHC 16 gig (2 @ 8 Gig) to work. I did post a separate newbie message which details my messages and "no" they don't appear on the N800 screen, but on my Windows XP computer. I feel I am really close to getting this done, but this clock thing is driving me nuts. Guess they can't "authenticate" me without the exact time??? Again, thanks for your kind and patient tone, I hope I don't wear out my welcome on this. Thanks also for letting me know the software (.NET framework 2.0) is OK. It did manage to move the process along to recognizing the tablet and I was getting excited at that point that it was going to work.

A lot of other PC programs use .NET as well, so installing it is generally a good idea.
