So I can't get Pidgin to install on my N800. Its totally updated (not OS 08 but the latest patch.) Nothing I do works. I added it to my repository list, and when its enabled on that list in application manager it asks to refresh, starts downloading, and then it says "Unable to refresh list. Last Refreshed list is shown."

What could I be doing wrong?

look in
Application manager menu
Tools
Log...

which Catalog is failing to refresh?

try to disable that one and try again

If it is one of the required ones for Pidgin then we need to fix it. Which is not working and what are the settings you have in the Application Catalog list.

this is exactly what the log says:

BTW: there are a few of the 'suggested" repositories that don't work too... like Maemo Hackers, Pidgin, & Khertan. I don't know many others but I have 6 others that work other than the 2 Nokia Catalogues.

make sure your Catalogs are exactly like those.

"Not Found" is a critical (but sometimes transient) error - if it persists, disable that repository (and if you need it, look for alternatives).

"gzip returned an error code" is critical as well, but generally transient - the packages list was damaged and can't be decoded, which usually happens on overloaded servers when the encoding subprocess runs into a timeout or resource limit, delivering only part of the file. Another attempt will usually fix it.

Broken or missing keys raise a warning, but don't abort the refresh.

Still didn't work. After asking to refresh it downloads a bunch but then says the same thing. "Unable to refresh list. Last refreshed list is shown."

it sounds like there might be more than one catalog causing trouble here. Also I see some duplicates?

I would go through all the catalogs you have added and disable them all. Then do a refresh. Keep enabling them one at a time and when one fails, either delete it or fix it.

(I have never gained root access either, had the N800 for 8 months now.)

Edit: Just saw your last comment. So, its all working? Great

easy fix it to create you a jablet.org jabber account then set up the aim transports. it may sound complex but zerojay has it set up pretty easy. pm me if you waant to try it out and I will help also.
