I have been looking at the N800/810 recently and absolutely love them, the 810 in particular! My question is the most basic of all newbie questions regarding connectivity...
I live in an average, large town in the UK. If anyone asked me about wifi/wlan etc, I would say that wireless networks are limited to libraries/coffee shops/hotels etc. Will my future N810 only work in these places?? It seems that all Nokia videos I've seen on Youtube have people walking down the street and using their tablets, of course! I'm curious as to whether that will work for me here! Is it through public, non-encrypted wifi networks that the tablets can be used in public, outdoor spaces?
Also, are there any running costs to owning a N800/810? Such as might come from an ISP or telecommunications company?
Now to stir things up a little!! I have no mobile/cell phone at all. I will very likely be moving to Malta in January and touring Italy/Sicily until this time next year! I read the recent post on Italy here, will my N810 be redundant abroad without a mobile phone?!
I'll leave it there!! Thank you in advance everyone!!
If you want to be connected with the N8xx while walking down the street you'll have to use a BT-phone connection, preferably to a phone with some above-GPRS connection. In my experience though the EDGE/3G connectivity is in a sorry state of affairs, nothing wrong with the N8xx, the problem is in the low quality of these services. I can't even interact with gmail through the web browser over 3G, due to too many packet losses (as I can see clearly when I use the same service on a desktop computer with proper networking analysis tools). Well, it does work fine one day out of 40.. or so.
Fortunately, in my town there are lots of free wi-fi hotspots, so while in town my N800 excels. At least while sitting down with a coffee!
