Hello,

my first post. I got my n810 yesterday and have been playing around for a while. Very nice. I am also using when I wake up in the middle of the night to read some news and try to get sleep again...

I also tried to install Skype and the system wouldn't allow it because it needs the new firmware (or software version). Mine is v. 1.2007.42-18, but the newer one is 19 and the Nokia web site specifies that to make skype work, we need this last version.

I have trouble updating the OS via the Nokia installer. The installer would not 'see' the device. I have tried it several times and also made the attempt on another computer. Any hints?

I am running Windows XP SP2 and I followed the instructions.

Thanks and sorry for the length of this post.

Does the N810 ever get to the NOKIA screen with the USB icon in the top right corner? If not, then make sure you are doing a full power off on it, unplug the AC adapter, and hold down the HOME button (with the house icon) when you power it on, and keep HOME held down until you get to that screen. And just to eliminate any other possible issues, use the cable that came with the N810, not some other... and no hub in between.

I got tricked by this several times. I had to be careful and hold down the bottom button/tab (they call it the 'swap' key...on the N800 it was the 'home' key) at the same time as you press the power button. Keep holding down the 'swap' key till the Installer 'finds' the device.

The trick: If you release the 'swap' key too quickly, the usb icon still appears up in the right hand corner and tricks you into thinking that it's in the right mode, but then it just boots like normal and you are in 'usb mode' but the installer won't 'see' the device.

I hope this helps.

On the 810 there I find no key with a house. There is a 'Swap key' which is ABOVE the Escape key on the pair located centre left. Is this the one you mean?

Thanks,

Thanks folks,

I finally was able to make it work. Maybe I kept the switch too long or I insterted the USB cable too early (before the appropriate screen appeared on the installer). It is tricky but after 7 or 8 attempts, bingo!

I hope everything will be ok after this. I like the n810 more and more... Sio far so good and shortcomings can only be mine.
