What I did was simply not to use the LAST downloadable image of OS2007HE - used the previous one instead.
Then repeated the formula except for the fact that I was no longer able to find BECOMEROOT. So installed EASYROOT and issued the same SUDO GAINROOT command. It worked.
As I was moving backwards, as a precaution the real sequence was:
1. Last 2006 image placed back in the tablet
2. OS2007HE - previous to the last available
3. Installed XTERM
4. Installed easyroot
The formula was exactly the winning one - shown is the beginning of this thread.
One last word. I am not sure that if I reinstalled the very same last OS2007HE it would fail.
The point is that I lost confidence in my installation simply because I messed up with it too much. (mostly learning XTERM and its use w/the external card)
So, someone could try it again.
As a side product: now I know a little about Linux...

Just confirmed that it works Ok with the last HE version: 4.2008.7-1
Please note that this is not OS2008HE.
It confirms my suspects in the previuous post: I had messed up everything with my learning by error process.

My first post here... but just wanted to say thanks for all the info on this thread. I've had my 770 for almost 2 years but only recently flashed it to 2007HE (same 4.2008.7-1 as Jorge used). Skype works excellent so far thanks to the step by step instructions posted here.
Just one small question. What files exactly does the cleanup stage mentioned above remove? I have not done this yet. What are the consequences of me not doing so?

I'm following the instructions right now (started with the previous to the last OS2007HE) , but i reached d) setup tightVNC...i found the viewer for pc, but i don't know where to download it from for my n770
Can you ppl help me like giving me detailed steps with links for the 'VNC' , 'XTERM' and 'easyroot' parts of the installation ,i'll be very thankful

for all people having problems with running skype under os2007HE. after copying skyhost to /usr/bin check permission rights of copyed file and copare it with the old file. in my case it helped to set rights to 755 and owner and group to root (not user:users or sth)
