When I put OS 2008 on my n800 today, I was surprised to find that I had trouble downloading several programs because I was missing the needed libraries. To save you some time, here are the steps to follow to get the libraries you needs.

1. Open the application manager (under settings). Pull down the menu and under tools select application catalog. Enter red pill mode by typing in "matrix" in the web address (erase http:/ and just type in matrix) and hit cancel. Select red pill. This will let us add some necessary libraries to run apps we're going to download.

Select new and create the following catalogs:

web address: http://maemo-hackers.org/apt
distribution: chinook
components: main

[click ok and create the next one:]

web address: http://eko.one.pl/maemo
distribution: mistral
components: user

[click ok and create another one:]

web address: http://repository.maemo.org
distribution: bora
components: free non-free

Close the window and refresh your application list. Browse installable applications.

2. Install libbz2-1.0
Install libffi4
Install python2.5

3. Open up the application manager again, select new, type in matrix, hit cancel, and select blue pill

4. Browse installable applications and download ukmp, kagu, and claws-mail

5. Download some other stuff. If you find you are missing any libraries, try entering red pill mode and looking for the missing library.

6. Under settings, select your control panel. At the bottom select panels and organize your applications. This will allow you to put the programs you loaded into different or new folders and to generally organize your programs the way you want to.

7. Bookmark http://gronmayer.com/it This has a list of repositories that you may want to add to your application catalogue.

This should help you avoid endless searching of the forums looking for the lib you need to run that "cool" ap you found.

You are probably right. The application manager should search all your available repositories for any dependencies. So maybe this method is overkill.

I'm really not absolutely certain because I have all the repositories I need and haven't been through this recently, so I was going by my recollection of how it works.

It's what I have been recommending to people and nobody has said it didn't work, so I assume it does.

I didn't have to enter red pill mode and had no trouble with libraries. I just went to what I think of as the repository site (www.gronmayer.com/it/) and added all the available repositories. Then I opened application manager and looked for all the apps it said were installable. Then I installed them.

Red pill mode + finding the library might be a good thing to do in some instances.

By the way, did you notice that application manager in the 2008 version marks programs that are installed but broken with a little red mark? It does!

The two I had like that were fixed by uninstalling those programs and reinstalling them.
