can you install apps on the SD cards or are they just used for multimedia storage?

It's possible, with a little work.
Out of box Flash media is mounted with the "noexec" option, you'll want to change that to "exec"
I've done it manually before, but haven't tried too hard to make it permanent (normally you'd edit /etc/fstab, but that didn't seem to stick)
