Its Jan 10, 2008 I've had my N800 about 3 weeks. I'm pretty much set up to use my N800 for taking notes in class, keeping up to date on my finances, calendar, contacts, and some gaming.

I am having trouble getting a working input method for japanese characters.

Apparently I should be able to hit a key sequence like Shift+Space and get some kind of Asian charater input method to appear in any application that accepts text entry like maemopad, notes or even gnumeric, but I'm missing some setting switch. Or the latest OS2007 has a problem with asian characters.

I'm inclined to believe I'm not yet set up correctly.

I reflashed to OS2007. Installed python 2.5, and several useful repositories making sure not to install duplicate repositories.

I installed the asian charater support and the Maemo Gjiten (Japanese dictionary for Gnome adapted for Maemo). The dictionary works fine.

From the Application Manager installable applications view I have installed SCIM and UIM and a bunch of little apps that have SCIM and UIM in their name, and ultimately ended up with an SCIM set up application which has lots of settings.

I'll post my list of installed repositories and apps in the Apps forum later. I just wanted to see if anyone knew of an OS2007 problem with global Japanese charater support.

No thanks OS2008 doesn't have a fully functional gnumeric version yet.

I also checked out the Maemo CJK support for OS2007. It also didn't present an obvious way to turn on the global Asian character input. I'll let you know when I figure it out.

data: did you try CJK input on OS2008? Anyone else tried?

I'm tempted but I'd like to know how usable it is. According to the page it's still beta and may be buggy.
