How do you think will this improve/affect Maemo?

seeing as maemo is GTK-based and trolltech produce the "competing" QT, I'd be surprised if it affects the tablets at all. I would also be unhappy as I like the feel of GTK much more than QT.

This is another smart business move by Nokia. It adds to the chances that we will have a future with more open mobile computing devices. Maemo won't see immediate changes, but the Qt folks have some software we could use...
