I have a v3m razr with verizon, I have used several of the hacks on the hacktherazr site. I have been doing this for 9 months with my palm, and I also have done it with the n810.

Generally i use it for email checking and a brief visit to a website for weather/dictionary use.

I have not used it to stream video and am not connected for much more than 5-10 minutes at a time, tops.

so far, i have not received any bills or charges from verizon. I believe this is because of two factors

a) my usage is pretty low kb wise
b) I disabled evdo and ONLY USE 1x dialup.

on the forums over at hack the razr experiance has demonstrated that using EVDO is far far more likley to get you a gigantic bill, where as, thus far, nobody has reported verizon noticing the 1x connections.

1x isn't the fastest thing around, obviously, its like your old dial up modem, (a positive aspect of this is that forcing 1x only has increased my battery life on standby when im in areas where evdo isnt as strong a signal, the v3m is always searching for evdo unless you hack it, and this drains battery).

anyway, If you want to stream videos for free your probably SOL, but for a quick email, or to check the weather, read an article etc, it has cost me only minutes, so far.

I use a V3xx , an n810, and ATT's Media Max 200. I get unlimited 3g data service for $20 per month above my phone plan. As a bonus, it's easy to tether my Powerbook as well.

Ok, I do not have a Razr, but I do have a Krzr, which should be the exactly the same idea.

I DID NOT DO any SEEM edits to my phone.
I Have tethered before, no effect on my bill yet, obviously try to keep it reasonable.
I haven't tethered the NIT yet, as I am still waiting for mine to arrive, but I tethered my laptop and PPC on several occasions. I have even used it to download (small) files on occasion, when on vacation without another reliable connection.

I DO use EVDO. - so far so good.

So, What did I do? I connected the phone to the computer using the mini USB cable, and (after installing the drivers for the phone) used the QPST Tools to modify the settings on the phone. This software, which is sort of hard to get, allows you full access to the Qualcom Chips the phone is based on.

The Idea behind them charging you differently for tethering is that the phone Authenticates to the network differently if tethered. Change it to authenticate the same, and you should be all set.

I Simply have the Verizon Video thing ($15/mo), and this entitles me to unlimited internet. Now, technically this does NOT cover tethering, but what they do not know can't hurt me...

How to do this:

Directions are HERE

(oh, and a simpler method of determining the port, without needing additional software, is to look in device manager, then modems, then click properties on whichever your phone is, and look for the port info)

HERE are the files I used - they can be hard to find. Sorry about the rapidshare, but this is the kind of thing I don't really want kicking around on my server..... (as QPST is not exactly publicly available).

QPST should work on anything based on the Qualcomm chips, as long as you have the right drivers and cables. The KRZR drivers SHOULD work for your RAZR, I think.

OBVIOUSLY, you are an adult, and I take no responsibility for you breaking your phone or getting a huge bill, or anything else that happens, for that matter.

Hope this Helps,
Patrick
