Ok, maybe this is covered elsewhere but a quick search didn't turn up anything in particular.

Yes, my GPS is pretty terrible. Even with warm starts I get a lock time of at least 2-3 minutes. Average time is between 5-10 minutes.

So, I'm wondering. Can anyone tell me just exactly where the GPS antenna is located? Like, what position should I hold the N810 in to get an optimum view of the sky for the GPS antenna. I even used this thing while I was on the plane once at at 20k ft it still took 10 minutes to lock. So maybe I'm just holding it wrong.

I've also tried the system reboot trick, and running the Map program first and then Maemo mapper. Mostly I'm just interested in finding out the best way to hold it.....

I believe it's more of a line of sight kind of thing. If you are in a car, it's sitting in the cradle on the dash. If you are walking, nothing is blocking its line of sight.

Other GPS units that may lock in better without line of sight are likely pushing more power to the antenna.

If I put it near a window, it'll lock in within a minute. If I pull it away from the window it sometimes loses signal within a few minutes.

My opinion is that the problem is in the chip design and/or software. Sometimes my N810 takes >5 minutes to get a fix even with clear unobstructed skies. Once a fix is obtained, signal strength is great, so the antenna is fine.

It looks like N810 doesn't store GPS almanac data, requiring a cold fix almost every single time.

BTW, I can swear my GPS could get a quicker fix with OS2008 beta. Anyone else notice worse GPS performance under the latest OS2008?

Direct from the Internet Tablet OS 2008 Edition User Guide:

"Nokia N810 Internet Tablet -- Your device has an internal GPS receiver. The GPS receiver is located in the upper left corner of the device. When using the receiver, hold the device upright in your hand or in the mobile holder; or place the device on the table using the desk stand. Make also sure that your device has a clear view of the sky."

I'm lazy, prior to my searching does anyone know exactly if/where the log files are generated so we could compare start-up times?
The track data only shows after the GPS is locked in, I'm looking for data that says GPS turned on, da-de-da, GPS locked in.
I've been getting start up times from less than a minute to "forget about it" (north facing window from a hotel room, under trees)

I was going to post about this the other day, but I completely forgot...

Yes, if you are holding your IT on the left side and your index finger is covering the upper-left corner, the GPS reception will much worse than if you held your IT differently.

I experienced this as I was driving to work. I was holding the IT in front of me, up against the steering wheel, with my left hand holding the left side of the IT. I got almost all the way to work and my IT had only found three satellites. Then, I repositioned my hand so that none of my fingers were covering the upper-left of the IT and... BAM! I got all six fixes within five seconds.

Crazy!

Tim

ProTip: Don't hold your internet tablet on your steering wheel while driving, a windshield mount is only 20ish bucks and that is a small price to pay compared to accidentally killing someone because you are too busy fiddling with your gadgets.

Oh, I have a mount... But, where's the fun in that!

Water blocks GPS signals almost entirely. The human body is mostly water. There is enough water in your hand to completely block the signals. Rain and clouds won't block it, because of the space between the drops, but solid water will, as efficiently as metal.
