I have recently acquired a N810 and am very pleased with it. However, this week I attended a conference and attempted to use it to take notes. I used the notepad app that comes installed. Several times it suddenly closed mid-session. It seemed to automaticly save, but it lost material on several of these occasions so it didn't save as it closed. Is it not designed to stay open for an hour straight? Did I do something? Is it buggy? I am a reasonably experienced computer user, but am not an "alpha geek" or a programmer and this is my first linux experience. So please keep the acronym use to a minimum in answers.

I have never experienced crashes on the notes app, but indeed I use much more Xournal for my notes.

I assume you're talking about the "Notes" app?

I've never had that happen to me, have you updated your N810's firmware to the latest version?

Firmware updates are very very easy if you have access to a Windows PC, I've done a tutorial about it on my site:

http://tabletschool.blogspot.com/200...-firmware.html

The first firmware version on the N810 had some bugs in it because it was the first public release of the new OS 2008 operating system. The updated version fixed a lot of these bugs.

Yes, it is designed to stay open for over an hour.

It sounds like you've found a bug, either in the app or the OS.

Did I do something?
Were you running any other applications at the time, apart from Notes? If so, which ones?

Have you installed any additional applications yourself?

The tablets are very very easy to use, the Linux stuff is entirely "behind the scenes". You don't need any technical knowledge to operate these gadgets.

What you describe does sound like a bug, but you get those on all electronic gadgets, even simple stuff like games consoles and music players. Hopefully this particular bug is something that can be cured by a firmware update.

If the firmware update doesn't help, then you could try using a note taking app other than Notes. You can easily install new apps by going to maemo.org/downloads in the tablet's browser, there are some alternative note taking apps there.

Another option is using the Google Documents website (docs.google.com), which works on the N800 and the N810 but of course it requires an internet connection because it's all done online.

Crashed on me too. Brand new device, just flashed it (it's out of power at the moment, forget the exact version of OS2008)
