It looks like the headphone jack on the Nokia 810 won't accept an ordinary headphone plug. Is it possible to buy an adapter so I can use my existing headphones with my N810?

It accepts a standard 1/8" plug. I'd be happy to sell you an adapter for $29.99, though, if you really want to buy it.

just to reiterate the N810 has a 1/8" jack which is your standard headphone jack

1/4" is a for a guitar amp and 1/16" is a cell phone plug used by hands free devices.

The headphones I had purchased at WalMart (and the ones I took from Jet Blue) work perfectly on both my laptop and my N810 with no adapter, unlike my cell phone which needs an adapter 1/16 to 1/8 inch.

What should be noted is that the headphones that come with the N810 have a built in microphone that works with the N810 only (I think). I've tried them with a MacBook and they didn't output sound correctly. However, the N810 can use any standard headphone plug.

Headphones will work, but if you are using a wired hands-free (ie. headset with mic), then it may be limited to the Nokia ones. I've been using a set Panasonic headphones with no problems for a couple of months already, and I believe that the N800 and N810 both use 3.5mm plugs and not 2.5mm ones typically found on Nokia's mobile phones these days.

The N800 and N810 use completely standard 3.5mm headphones, just like the ones used on Walkmans, iPods etc etc.

If your headphones don't fit in it, then they're not standard.

Thanks to everyone for replying. I think the problem was that I wasn't pushing the plug in hard enough. Anyway, my headphones now work.

If you pair a bluetooth headset with the N810 the wireless bluetooth headset/earpiece actually becomes a headphone although its either mono or one channel. Any audio played thru the table speakers gets sent to the BT earpiece. I listen to internet radio at work this way.
